Interview with the Initiators, Prof. Dr. Isabel Dziobek and Yasmine Orth - Building Bridges Between Academia and Practice

Perhaps what makes this specialis also something we’re both naturally good at: building bridges. I think we’re both very open-minded and curious people, and I found it really exciting to build a bridge to the world of science, while you found it really exciting to build a bridge to the practical side—opening people’s minds to the other side, creating synergies, and truly finding appreciation for both fields!
— Yasmine Orth

Interview: The Vision Behind the Berlin Breathwork Days

In this conversation, Yasmine Orth—founder of the Berlin Breathwork Days, conscious entrepreneur, and breathwork facilitator—and Prof. Dr. Isabel Dziobek—professor at Humboldt University of Berlin and researcher in the field of breathwork—share their shared vision for the festival.

At the heart of it all is an idea that makes the Berlin Breathwork Days special: building a bridge between science and practice.

While breathwork has become increasingly popular worldwide in recent years, scientific research and practical experience often remain separate. The Berlin Breathwork Days aim to bridge this gap—and create a space where researchers, facilitators, therapists, and interested individuals can engage in dialogue.

The collaboration between Yasmine Orth and Isabel Dziobek brings together two perspectives: practical experience from the breathwork community and scientific research on breathing techniques and their effects on the body and brain.

Science meets Practice

A key component of the Berlin Breathwork Days is the Professional Day on Friday, when theory and practice come together in a focused way.

International researchers present the latest studies on breathwork, while experienced practitioners offer insights into their work. The panel discussions are particularly engaging, as they bring together diverse perspectives and encourage open, critical discussion.

The point is not to decide which approach is “right,” but to learn from one another and develop new perspectives together.

Experience, Inclusion, and Community

The coming days will provide greater opportunities for experience, exchange, and community.

Participants can experience a variety of breathwork sessions, explore new approaches, and deepen their experiences through integrative activities—such as sound, reflection, or journaling.

In addition, topics such as leadership, personal development, and values-based action also play a role: How can the insights gained from breathwork positively influence our lives, our work, and our society?

Navigating a growing field

Another goal of the Berlin Breathwork Days is to provide more guidance in the diverse world of breathwork.

Today, breathwork encompasses many different methods—ranging from calming breathing techniques to intensely energizing or mind-expanding practices. At the same time, there are traditional breathing practices such as pranayama, which have been part of Eastern traditions for centuries.

Through initiatives such as the Berlin Breathwork Council—a collaboration between practitioners and researchers (including Humboldt University and the University of Potsdam)—the Berlin Breathwork Days aim to help foster greater structure, dialogue, and understanding in this growing field.

A hot topic

For both women, breathwork is, above all, one thing: a vibrant topic that brings people together.

Breathing is with us in every moment of our lives. When people come together to explore this fundamental element, a special atmosphere of openness, curiosity, gratitude, and community often emerges.

It is precisely this energy that defines the Berlin Breathwork Days.
