Science meets Experience

The first Berlin Breathwork Days were an extraordinary experience that went far beyond conventional breathwork.

Initiated by The Lovers & Leaders and in cooperation with Humboldt University, an intensive exchange took place from September 17 to 22, 2024, bringing together science and experience.

It was an invitation to pioneers, psychotherapists, and participants of the German breathwork movement to discuss the opportunities and challenges of breathwork without commercial pressure.

The objective of the event was to bring together the breathwork community, facilitate knowledge transfer for this global trend, raise awareness for the responsibility of set & setting, and naturally, to jointly explore the transformative power of breath.

September 18, 2024: AWARE Film Presentation & Community

This kick-off evening for the community featured the screening of the documentary film AWARE - Journey into Consciousness by Frauke Sandig and Eric Black. The film poignantly explores the mystery of consciousness and poses questions of profound depth:

What is consciousness? Where does it come from? And do other living beings possess it too?

The film followed six renowned researchers who approached consciousness from various scientific and spiritual perspectives. The film evening not only offered the opportunity to watch the film but also to engage in discussion about it with other participants.

It was a great pleasure to share our film with this wonderful and open community and to discuss it.

September 20, 2024: Main Day of the Berlin Breathwork Days

On the main day, in cooperation with Humboldt University, breathwork as a bridge between body and mind was the central focus. The day began with embodiment sessions, including a Physiognomy & Voice workshop by voice coach Paula-Maria Stewart, bodywork by Anja Haberlandner, and an introduction to the nervous system by Polyvagus specialist Sotantar Jörg Wendland.

The two HU scientists Dr. Barbara Breitenstein & Nina Harterr presented initial results from an international Breathwork Survey, part of the largest international study on Breathwork & its impact on trauma, commencing this year.

After the break, Dr. Martha Havenith presented how breathwork influences our mind, offering neuroscientific perspectives on the practice.

In the subsequent "Breathwork Reloaded" panel, scientists, clinicians, and pioneers of various breathwork methods and techniques convened to discuss the future opportunities, challenges, commonalities, and distinctions of these transformative modalities.

Moderation: Prof. Dr. Isabel Dziobek & Yasmine Orth
Speakers:

  • Dr. Martha Havenith (Scientist, Ernst-Strüngmann Institute for Neuroscience, Author)

  • Hans Rutrecht (MIND Foundation)

  • Vidya & Klaus Ulbricht (Founders Lichtatmung®, naou School of Consciousness)

  • Prof. Dr. Dr. Michael Rapp (Holotropic Breathwork, Psychotherapist, University of Potsdam, Social & Preventive Medicine)

  • Eva Kaczor (Founder Psychedelic Breath®, Psychologist)

  • Sukkhadas Auer (Wim Hof® Instructor, Meditation Teacher)

  • Annette Söhnlein (Pranayama, Yoga & Meditation Teacher, Trauma-informed)

The day concluded with a cacao ritual led by Coach Esmée Seidler and a Kirtan concert, which enhanced the sense of community through the integrative vocal work of Sacred Voice Artist Paula-Maria Stewart.

You very convincingly succeeded in moderating an appreciative conversation that built bridges between worlds that might otherwise perceive themselves as too intellectual, detached, or dry, or as too intuitive, inexplicable, or tradition-bound.

It is rare for pioneers of an avant-garde movement, such as those in the German breathwork community, to openly and non-commercially discuss the risks and immense opportunities of breathwork, as occurred at the inaugural Berlin Breathwork Days. In other words: passion and mutual goodwill, precisely as the initiator Yasmine Orth envisioned.

Ancillary Breathwork Sessions

There were profound breathwork sessions:

  • Wim Hof® Method Workshop: Lecture, Breathwork & Ice Bathing with Sukkhadas Auer

  • Connective Breathwork with Paul Auls and Anja Haberlandner

  • Metamorphysis Breath with Yasmine Orth and Amina Zoe

  • Meeting Origin – Breath Journey with Julia Wunderlich

  • Spirit of Breath with Sascha Zeilinger

  • Pranayama + Yoga with Annette Söhnlein

  • Lichtatmung® with Vidya and Klaus Ulbricht

These profound experiences enabled participants to experience various techniques to connect more deeply with their inner self and their breath.

The event successfully provided a supportive platform where science and embodied knowledge (experience) converged, fostering new connections between disciplines.

For all who missed this moving experience, the second Berlin Breathwork Days will take place from May 13-16, 2025.

The Breathwork Days were an inspiring event that uniquely connected scientific research with the exchange of experiences from our and other breathwork schools. We are pleased to have been part of the panel and to contribute to the dialogue and exchange about what is important in breathwork, to collectively shape the future of this practice.
— Klaus and Vidya Ulbricht, Founders of Lichtatmung® and naou®.
